Catching Up

June 2, 2006

Whew! A very busy week for me! I have just returned from touring a
school in Melbourne, Australia! I haven’t been able to blog at all. I
met a new friend, Marcie, whose favourite rock band is LORDI. They
dress up like monsters from old American movies! I did a search and
found one of their YouTube videos:

Thursday 13 ways to live better on less Money!

May 24, 2006

1-Analyze your spending. Look closely at what you’ve spent for the last three to six months:  look for spending you might regret. As you examine your expenditures, ask yourself, “What dollars satisfied a need, what dollars satisfied a want and which expenditures might not have satisfied either?”

2-Make a budget. Sit down and plot how each dollar will be spent “on paper, on purpose before the month begins.” (For more on budgeting basics, read “A simpler way to save: the 60% solution.”)

3-Never pay retail. Everything’s negotiable, so negotiate already! Also know when to shop. For example, buy clothing in season. That’s when the retailers consider it past the season and put it on sale, says Clark Howard, co-author of “Clark’s Big Book of Bargains.”

4-Try store brands. “Every time somebody goes to the supermarket, I want them to try one more store brand,” which Howard notes costs up to 40% less. “To get people to change everything isn’t possible. But to get them to change one item at a time is less difficult.” (You’ll find other ways to save in “20 ways to slash your grocery bill.”)

5-Buy used. New is nice, but for the best buy, think pre-owned. After two years of depreciation, you can get a good, high-quality car at virtually half price.

6-Pay cash. You can get a better deal when you use cash as a negotiating tool.

7-Choose your credit card wisely. If you must use a credit card, make sure it’s one that gives you something.

8-Shop around for auto insurance. You want your car protected, but make sure you get the most cost-effective coverage you can.

9-Dial up phone savings. Your cell phone certainly comes in handy, but is your plan really worth what you pay? Do you travel with your cell phone? Be sure you don’t face roaming charges. A better telephone-travel move might be a discount calling card.

10-Change your mortgage payment method. Make biweekly payments instead of monthly house payments.

11-Use family and community resources. This is something that a lot of new parents discover when faced with the cost of expensive baby goods that their child soon will outgrow. “Rather than going out and buying a new crib, this and that, there’s a lot of sharing,” says Chris Farrell, author of “Right on the Money!

You can also do the same thing at other stages of life with furniture, appliances, electronics and clothing. Farrell employed the strategy to get rid of a fairly recent desktop computer when he switched to a laptop. “A lot of us are in situations where we spend money on something we wanted, but it’s outgrown its usefulness,” he says. “And someone else could get pleasure out of it.”

12-Pay yourself first. Automatically transfer part of each paycheck to a savings account before you get your take-home pay. Save one hour a day of your income each week.

13-Exercise restraint. Finally, call upon your willpower when it comes to spending. Want to save money on your phone bill? Hang up. Want to use less gas? Stay home. Do you really need a bread maker when you have an oven?

「汪洋中的一条船」补充资料

May 18, 2006

Thursday 13 reasons why young people want SEX!

May 10, 2006

This post might be a little embarassing for some to read, so if offended, please move on. Thank-You!
Tom and Judy Lickona, authors of a book called Sex, Love & You: Making the Right Decision, list 13 reasons why some young people choose to have sex:

1. Sexual attraction – We are sexual beings so it’s natural that we are sexually attracted to others. Without sex, the human race would become extinct!

On the other hand, human beings control their sexual attractions to others – all the time. If you pass someone on the street who seems attractive to you, do you suddenly rip off your clothes and try to have sex right there on the street? Of course not.

Human beings have the power to choose whether or not to have sex. Two animals, if attracted to each other, will probably go ahead and have sex on the street, regardless of who’s watching. For human beings, there are other issues to be considered, which will be explored below.

2. Social and media pressure – We are constantly bombarded with sexual messages in the movies, TV shows, magazine ads, and billboards. The producers of these messages are taking advantage of our responsiveness to sexual stimuli to make a profit. Of course, they often fail to include information about any of the consequences of sex such as disease or pregnancy.

It’s not easy to resist this constant sexual bombardment. Many have expressed anger about what they see as socially irresponsible media. Others say they wish that the producers of these messages would show more restraint or at least some intelligence and balance in their messages.

Instead of just waiting for this “erotic environment” to change, what can you do? You can begin to understand why these messages are being produced and to see why they are not reality.

Other reasons young people choose to have sex include:

3. Peer pressure – Many young people feel great pressure from other teenagers to become sexually active, as if having sex alone were a sign of maturity.

4. Pressure from a partner

5. Desire to be seen by others as “normal”

6. Parental example of permissiveness – Just as there are some parents who have a problem with abuse of alcohol or drugs, some parents abuse sex. It’s natural for young people to be influenced by their parents’ example.

7. Wrong kind of sex education – One teenage boy said about the sex education he had received, “they teach us all the facts about sex. But they don’t teach us any rules.”

Sex education programs which merely give the facts about sex in a “value-neutral” way and which imply that the only issue to be concerned about is whether you’re using a condom or not have been shown to be very ineffective in helping teenagers make responsible decisions.

8. Mistaken beliefs.

9. “Don’t know what else to do” – a high school student who wrote an essay on teenage pregnancy in an area of New York City where many girls become pregnant stated that teenagers become sexually involved because they are “bored,” and “have nothing better to do.”

10. Use of alcohol and drugs.

11. Low self-esteem

12. Loneliness

13. No good reasons to say no.

The Lickonas interviewed a 21 year-old college student who said:
“Chastity [which is a decision to wait until marriage to have sex] has been an enormous challenge for me during my college years. I have failed at it because I couldn’t answer the question, ‘Why shouldn’t I have sex?’ I gave in because I figured, since I didn’t have a solid answer, I must be wrong. I also read all this stuff that claims that virginity is unnatural, abnormal, and ‘repressed.’ ”

The News is Not Good

May 7, 2006

Many troubling items in the newspaper and on TV. I am thankful that i have my personal laptop and do not have to go outside to have the Internet.

Fatal net cafe blasts

Fatal net cafe blasts

POLICE in Hefei City, capital of east China’s Anhui Province, have launched a criminal investigation into two deadly Friday night Internet cafe explosions, Wang Tao, a spokesman of the city’s public security bureau, said yesterday.

A task force, formed by criminal investigators and officers from Internet supervisory authorities, is working on the explosions, which killed two and injured four, Wang said.

Local authorities will also take measures to enhance safety of Internet cafes, according to an emergency conference hosted by the public security bureau yesterday.

Public security, Internet supervisory and fire control authorities will launch a citywide inspection of Internet cafes to clear up safety problems.

They will also urge operators and administrators of Internet cafes around the city to require real-name registrations upon entrance, the conference said.

On Friday night, two Internet cafes on Meiling Road exploded for unknown reasons, one after another, leaving two dead and injuring four others.

Local police received an emergency call at 9:36pm saying that a computer monitor in Haoyu Net Cafe, one of the two cafes, had exploded. When police officers and firemen arrived, they found the neighboring Juxing Net Cafe also endured a similar explosion, earlier media reports said.

One victim was a young man surnamed Xu, 25 and an employee of a local company.

The other was a man from Anhui’s Bengbu City surnamed Zhang, 23, who worked for Juxing Net Cafe as a part-time employee. A 15-year-old student was injured seriously, but has survived.

Thursday 13 reasons why I haven’t been blogging lately

May 3, 2006

1 – MY STUDIES – the most important thing in the world to me is my education. It is difficult. I am taking more than a normal share of courses. And I am so proud my English Language Grade is A. I am now preparing to study Arabic.

2 – MY COUSIN – Lorry is ALWAYS playing games on the computer! When he is not playing games on disk, he is playing against other gamers from all over the world on the Internet.

3 – MY PHOTOGRAPHY – I am also studying photography and have been quite busy with my pictures, and with a special showing I hosted at a gallery in HK.

4 – MY MUSIC – When I do have a little free time, I enjoy listening to music.

5 – MY POETRY – Next comes my journal of poetry. I love to write! No, I won’t be posting any poems!

6 – MY TRAVELS – I go back and forth between Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong all the time. Mom is in one place, Dad in another, and school another!

7 – MY COMPUTER HAD A VIRUS – which was a big problem. I am still not sure where it came from and I am very very very careful now and still scared it will happen again!

8 – Well, this is not 13 reasons, is it?  But I must stop here, I must go now!
